Fishing the ANSA Glenbawn Convention

Dave Clarke with a nice Bass caught on the troll at Glenbawn Dam

A little over 550 km away from Canberra, off the New England Highway just beyond the hustle and bustle of greater Sydney, lies Glenbawn Dam. It's a long drive but, as I discovered, Glenbawn Dam is truly a wonderful fishing spot with plenty to offer. It is there that, each September since 2002, the Newcastle Sportsfishing Club hosts the very first ANSA Convention of the fishing year.

Wild and woolly weather at the Sydney Sportsfishing Tournament

IMG 0046

Selfie by Runway 3 at Sydney Airport on Saturday morning. A few locals told me this is a good spot to target Flathead. Unfortunately, the remnants of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Trevor resulted in a lot of stormwater run-off putting the fish off the bite. But I'm looking forward to trying this spot again next year.

Mum's 70th Birthday was 29 March 2019, so what better way to celebrate than driving up to Sydney to fish the Sydney Sportsfishing Convention. The Convention was jointly hosted by the South Sydney Amateur Fishing Association and the St George Sportsfishing Club on 29-31 March 2019.

This was only my second attempt at fishing the convention in Sydney, so I asked the guys at Global Tackle at Kingsford for some advice on land-based spots.

The Draft ACT Aquatic and Riparian Conservation Strategy and Action Plans

The ACT Government has released a draft Aquatic and Riparian Conservation Strategy (pdf). The Strategy outlines how the ACT Government proposes to conserve and manage ACT's waterways including action plans for seven threatened aquatic species:

• Two-spined Blackfish
• Macquarie Perch
• Murray River Crayfish
• Silver Perch
• Trout Cod
• Murrumbidgee Bossiaea
• Tuggeranong Lignum

I encourage everyone to read the draft strategy and send me your comments. However, the strategy is 249 pages long. To assist members in looking up the sections that relate to recreational fishing, I have attached a 19 page summary:  Overview of sections related to fishing in the Draft ACT Aquatic and Riparian Conservation Strategy and Action Plans (pdf).

The summary is a table setting out the page numbers, topics, and a summary of the contents of that topic. In some cases, the contents were simply copied and pasted (including any guidelines that related to recreational fishing). The summaries covering pages 84 to 103 simply copy and paste the threat mitigation and management guidance column of Table 7.4. That table also covers a description of the habitat and its condition, threatened species and major threats of each of the river sections covered by the draft plan.

You can find out more information at the ACT Government's Have Your Say webpage on the Aquatic and Riparian Conservation Strategy.

Submissions close on 11 March 2018. If there is sufficient feedback on the draft plan from members, then I can start drafting a response on behalf of the Club. As the draft plan is a 249 page document, I will probably need at least two weeks to write a submission on behalf of the Club, so I would need everyone's feedback by Friday, 23 February 2018. I'll then look at whether we have enough feedback from the members to draft a submission.

Koi Herpes Virus - Q & A

Carp

IMG 3871 - Copy

This article aims to provide our members with a summary of the available information about the Koi Herpes Virus in plain English. If you were not at our May General Meeting, the members voted in favour of the Club supporting the release of the Koi Herpes Virus (subject to the Government adequately funding the clean-up of waterways of dead and dying Carp, habitat restoration and restocking of native fish). This article will hopefully reassure members about any concerns they may have about the safety of the Koi Herpes virus.
